👾Twin Dragons (NES Homebrew)
PlatformerA-TierMedium
Antoine Gohin, the French developer behind Broke Studio, has carved out a reputation as one of the most skilled voices in the modern NES homebrew scene — and Twin Dragons is his standout work. The premise is straightforward: you control a pair of twin dragons, each spitting fire, across more than twenty levels spanning grassy fields, volcanic caverns, and icy peaks. The hook is the cooperative dynamic. In two-player mode, each person controls one dragon, and the screen scrolls to follow both — coordination becomes essential as enemies flood the screen and platforms crumble around you. Even solo, the game asks you to manage both dragons at once, creating a frantic challenge akin to patting your head while rubbing your stomach. Gohin handcrafted every pixel, from the expressive dragon animations to the varied tile work. The chiptune soundtrack, composed for the NESs five-channel Ricoh 2A03 chip, drives the action with melodies lifted from the systems golden age. Released in 2018, Twin Dragons became a staple at retro gaming expos and remains a benchmark for what a determined developer can achieve on 1983 hardware with modern tools and genuine affection for the platform.
