๐พThwaite (NES Homebrew)
ActionA-TierHard
Thwaite is a tense, impeccably crafted NES homebrew arcade game by Damian Yerrick, first released in 2011. Drawing inspiration from Atari's Missile Command, the game tasks players with defending a peaceful village from an escalating ballistic missile assault. Enemy warheads arrive in waves โ each salvo faster, more numerous, and more devious in trajectory. The player launches counter-missiles from a fixed silo, detonating them mid-flight to intercept threats before they reach the settlement below. Ammunition is strictly limited; fire too freely and you are defenseless when a dense cluster appears, but hesitate and the village burns. Yerrick, known in the homebrew community for his development tools and technical writing, leveraged his deep hardware expertise to push the NES's sprite limits with vivid explosions, smooth missile trails, and screen-shaking impacts. A driving chiptune score and crisp sound cues heighten the tension of every interception. The game also features a two-player cooperative mode โ a rarity in homebrew releases โ where friends share a single screen to coordinate their defenses. Released when the scene was still finding its footing, Thwaite proved that new NES games could match the polish and intensity of the console's commercial-era arcade classics.
