👾Nomolos: Storming The Catsle (NES Homebrew)
PlatformerA-TierMedium
Nomolos: Storming The Catsle is an ambitious NES homebrew platformer developed by Gradual Games and released in 2013, notable as one of the most fully-featured independent NES titles of its era. Rather than playing a vampire hunter, players control Nomolos, a wizard whose domain has been overrun by an army of anthropomorphic feline invaders. Armed with a magical boomerang serving as both weapon and tool, Nomolos must traverse a sprawling multi-room castle, defeating cat knights, flying felines, and formidable boss guardians to reclaim the fortress. The boomerang is the defining mechanic: thrown in eight directions, it returns after a set distance and can be upgraded for more damage. Mastering its arc and timing is essential, as enemies are positioned at awkward angles requiring ricochet-like throws or precise spacing. The level design draws from Metroidvania traditions with locked doors, hidden passages, and ability-gated areas that reward backtracking and map memorization. Each boss grants a new ability that opens previously inaccessible sections. The game boasts impressive NES technical achievements including smooth scrolling, multi-phase boss encounters, and a battery-backed save system. Detailed pixel art gives each castle area a distinct visual identity, while the atmospheric chiptune soundtrack heightens the sense of adventure throughout this substantial campaign.
